This video demonstrates how Ken Zuckerman teaches students the structural rules of melodies in the Dorian mode. Students first learn the grammar of the raga, beginning with the Indian solfège and Western note names. Using call and response, Ken sings and the students imitate, internalizing the rules by repeating the phrases given by the teacher. Intermittent explanations and discussions serve to clarify the practice of each mode. He closes by offering ideas on expression and emotion associated with the modes.
