Mara Galassi studied pedal harp with Luciana Chierici in Milan and advanced her studies of early harp repertoire at the conservatory of Rotterdam and, through a Fulbright grant, at the Sarah Lawrence College in New York; she studied also in London with Michael Morrow. Galassi served as principal harpist for the Teatro Massimo in Palermo from 1979 to 1989.
 

Since 1984 she has done extensive research in the field of historical harps. She teaches historical harps and chamber music in Milan at the Civica Scuola di Musica and at the ESMUC in Barcelona. Galassi recorded with Glossa Music: Il viaggio di Lucrezia, Les  harpes du Ciel and A Microcosm Concerto.
 

In collaboration with Deda Cristina Colonna, Galassi conceptualized and participated in the film Voluptas dolendi: I gesti del Caravaggio (Art Film, Marco Fodella Foundation 2010).
