Ina Lohr and the Teaching of Early Music

Today the Early Music Movement is often conceived of as following its own distinct path. But a look at the history of the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis reveals that this was not true there, as the two people centrally involved in its establishment were simultaneously active in both early as well as the most current of modern music: Ina Lohr, musical assistant to the Basel
Chamber Orchestra, was also the person who established the curriculum at the school; and
Paul Sacher was the director of both. This talk will explore how the Schola’s beginnings can
be seen as a reflection and projection of the musical ideas of its time.
 

Anne Smith taught historical flutes and Renaissance performance practice at the Schola
Cantorum Basiliensis until her retirement in 2016, as well as being active in various chamber
ensembles. Her written work includes The Performance of 16th-Century Music: Learning from the Theorists and Ina Lohr (1903-1983): Transcending the Boundaries of Early Music. Currently she is participating in the research project Vicentino21 at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.
