The autobiography “Kleines Biechlin von meinem gantzen Leben” is a treasure of the Library of the Universität Basel: written by the craftsman Augustin Güntzer (1596-ca 1657). Travelling all over Europe on foot, he recounts both the daily danger of life as well as his discovery of cultural life in places like Venice, Paris or Rome. Matthias Klenota reads the source from the perspective of a modern day performer of music from around 1600 and discusses how to possibly incorporate information from similar sources into performance practice. This is the context of the music theatre piece Battaglia, partly based on Güntzer’s text: written by Matthias Klenota, it will premiere at Gare du Nord on 17.1.2023.
